LARRY JOYCE (1900-1977)
The late Larry Joyce,Ballyboro, Co. Wexford. singing "The banks of the Slaney far away".
This song was written by Padraig Keogh, Glencarraig, father of famous Wexford hurler Padge Keogh.
Hi - this is a great recording. My father (91) used to sing this as his party piece when he was a child. He later discovered there was a version of it used in the AMerican Civil war, same tune, but the banks were of a US river. He never found out who took from who but most likely it is originally a Slaney song and this certainly dates it as far back as mid-nineteenth century. I'd love to get the audio to play for my Dad who is having difficulties with his memory these days. If you can help, please email me on tomo@laragh.com. Best regards, Tom O'Neill (Carlow/Kilkenny)
So glad to find this site. My ancestors, the McGladderys (later known as the Gladneys) first came to this area in the 1740's. According to family lore, prior to that they had come to Ireland, by way of Holland, from France as Hugenots (French Protestants) fleeing persecution after King Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes. They married into the Graham and Fannin families and were millers on Carew's estate. Patrick Kennedy refers to this family at least twice in his book 'The Banks of the Boro'. I'm delighted that this history is being preserved! Thank you! Janet Long in the U.S.
This is a beautiful tune! I've just used it in an arrangement I wrote for Wexford-based a cappella group Cairde; you can hear a recording of the arrangement here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6Zd8Z9JGoY And find out more about Cairde here: https://www.facebook.com/pg/cairdechoir/posts/
